Faceshift developed software based on the image-based recognition of body movements - thereby providing the technology to create animated avatars and other figures that capture a person's facial expressions in real time. In August 2015 the spin-off was acquired by Apple under relative secrecy. Apple waited until November 24, 2015 to confirm the acquisition and added its customary statement: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." As of 2017 Apple still continued its perception, machine vision and deep learning operations in Zurich.
